There is no single IELTS score that works everywhere. The band you need depends on the country, the visa type, and in many cases the specific profession. This guide sets out the exact requirements for the most common immigration destinations — so you have a real target, not a guess.

United Kingdom

Skilled Worker Visa

The UK Skilled Worker visa requires proof of English at minimum CEFR B1. The approved tests are IELTS for UKVI, LanguageCert Academic UKVI, Trinity SELT, and PTE Academic UKVI. Standard IELTS (non-UKVI version) is not accepted for visa purposes.

RequirementIELTS for UKVI Score
Skilled Worker visa (minimum)4.0 in each component
Student visa (most universities)5.5–6.0 overall; 5.5 minimum per component
NHS nurse registration (NMC)7.0 overall; min 6.5 each component
NHS doctor (GMC)7.5 overall; min 7.0 each component (or OET Grade B)
Solicitor / barrister (SRA)Minimum 7.0 in each component

Note: the Skilled Worker visa minimum of 4.0 per component is the immigration floor. Your sponsoring employer or professional licensing body will often require a higher score independently of the visa requirement.

Australia

Australia uses three tiers of English proficiency for immigration points. IELTS General Training is used for skilled migration; IELTS Academic is required for some professional licensing.

English LevelIELTS RequirementPoints Impact
Competent English6.0 in each of the four componentsMinimum for visa; 0 points for language
Proficient English7.0 in each of the four components10 points added to points score
Superior English8.0 in each of the four components20 points added to points score

In a competitive pool, the difference between 6.0 and 7.0 in each component can be the difference between receiving an invitation and waiting indefinitely. Professional licensing adds further requirements:

  • AHPRA (nurses, doctors, allied health): 7.0 overall, minimum 7.0 each component
  • Engineers Australia: no specific IELTS requirement, but English competency is assessed through the application
  • Teachers (AITSL): 7.5 overall, minimum 7.0 each component

Canada

Canada Express Entry uses the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) scale. IELTS scores convert to CLB as follows:

CLB LevelIELTS SpeakingIELTS ListeningIELTS ReadingIELTS Writing
CLB 108.08.58.07.5
CLB 97.08.07.07.0
CLB 86.57.56.56.5
CLB 76.06.06.06.0

Federal Skilled Worker minimum: CLB 7 in all four abilities (IELTS 6.0 in each component).

Maximum CRS language points: CLB 10 in first language + CLB 9 in second language = 50 additional points, which is highly significant in a competitive draw.

Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) have their own requirements. Some are lower (CLB 4–5 for certain trades streams); others match or exceed federal requirements.

Know Your Gap Before You Book

Every country has a specific band target. Before paying for the exam, check where you currently are. If your target is IELTS 7.0 for UK nursing registration and you are currently at 5.5, you need a structured preparation plan — not just a test booking.

Use the free AI IELTS Band Predictor to get a predicted score across all four sections. Once you know your current level, you can calculate how far you need to go and whether you are ready to sit the real exam.
