Both PTE Academic and IELTS Academic test the same four skills — Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening — but the format, scoring method, cost, and acceptance policies differ significantly. Choosing the right test can save you time, money, and a failed application.

Speaking: The Biggest Difference

In IELTS, a trained human examiner sits across from you and asks questions in a structured interview. Your score can be influenced by body language, rapport, and the examiner's interpretation. In PTE, you speak into a microphone and AI scores your oral fluency, pronunciation, and content — no human involved.

For non-native speakers self-conscious about accents, PTE's AI scoring can actually be advantageous — the system is trained to recognise a wide range of accents and focuses on intelligibility rather than native-like pronunciation.

Writing: PTE Is More Structured

PTE Writing has two task types: Summarize Written Text (one sentence summary of a passage) and Write Essay (200–300 words). IELTS has Task 1 (describe a graph or diagram) and Task 2 (discursive essay). Candidates who struggle with visual data interpretation (Task 1) often find PTE Writing less challenging.

Which Test Has More Acceptance?

IELTS is currently accepted by more institutions globally (~11,500 universities vs ~3,000 for PTE). However, for the main destinations that English learners target — Australia, UK, New Zealand, Ireland, and the US — PTE acceptance is broad and growing rapidly. If you are targeting Canadian immigration specifically, you need PTE Core (not Academic) or IELTS.

Our Recommendation

Choose PTE Academic if: you perform better without human examiners, you can book quickly (PTE offers more frequent test dates), or you need results faster. Choose IELTS if your target institution or visa category specifically requires it, or if you are applying to Canadian immigration.
