PTE Academic — Pearson Test of English Academic — is a fully computer-scored English proficiency exam accepted by over 3,000 universities and immigration programmes worldwide. If you are applying to study or immigrate to Australia, the UK, New Zealand, or Canada, PTE is often a faster and more flexible option than IELTS.
How PTE Academic Works
Unlike IELTS, which uses human examiners for the Speaking section, PTE Academic is scored entirely by artificial intelligence. Every task — from describing an image to writing a summary — is evaluated by Pearson's automated scoring engine. This removes examiner subjectivity and means results are typically delivered within 5 business days (often within 48 hours).
The exam consists of three timed parts covering all four language skills:
- Part 1 — Speaking & Writing (~54–67 minutes): Personal Introduction, Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Re-tell Lecture, Answer Short Question, Summarize Written Text, Write Essay.
- Part 2 — Reading (~29–30 minutes): Reading and Writing: Fill in the Blanks, Multiple-choice (multiple answers), Re-order Paragraphs, Reading: Fill in the Blanks, Multiple-choice (single answer).
- Part 3 — Listening (~30–43 minutes): Summarize Spoken Text, Multiple-choice (multiple answers), Fill in the Blanks, Highlight Correct Summary, Multiple-choice (single answer), Select Missing Word, Highlight Incorrect Words, Write From Dictation.
The PTE Score Scale: 10–90
PTE Academic reports scores on a 10–90 scale, mapped approximately to CEFR levels:
- 85–90 → C2 (Mastery)
- 76–84 → C1 (Advanced)
- 59–75 → B2 (Upper-Intermediate)
- 36–58 → B1 (Intermediate)
- 30–35 → A2 (Elementary)
- 10–29 → A1 (Beginner)
Where Is PTE Accepted?
PTE Academic is accepted by 3,000+ universities and colleges worldwide, including all 43 UK universities and colleges, Australian universities, and hundreds of institutions in the United States, Canada, and Ireland. It is accepted for Australian skilled migration visas, New Zealand residence applications, and UK student visas.
PTE Academic vs PTE Core
PTE Core is a newer version specifically designed for Canadian immigration (Express Entry and Provincial Nominee Programs). If you are applying to Canadian immigration, you need PTE Core, not PTE Academic. For everything else — university admission, UK visa, Australian visa — use PTE Academic.
How Our AI Predictor Works
Our free AI-powered PTE Score Predictor uses the same adaptive questioning technology as our CEFR and IELTS predictors. Instead of sitting through the full 2-hour 15-minute exam, our system asks you questions across all four sections and adjusts difficulty based on your answers — stopping when it can estimate your score with confidence. Results arrive in 10–30 minutes rather than days.
