In both IELTS and PTE, how you sound matters, not just what you say. Fluency and pronunciation are scored directly. Shadowing is one of the most efficient ways to improve both, because it trains natural rhythm, stress and phrasing through repetition of real speech.

What IELTS Speaking Assesses

The IELTS Speaking test is scored on four criteria: Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation. Shadowing helps most directly with two of them:

  • Fluency: shadowing makes common phrases and sentence patterns automatic, so you hesitate less while searching for how to say things.
  • Pronunciation: the descriptors cover more than individual sounds. They include features such as stress, rhythm, intonation and connected speech, exactly what shadowing trains.

It can also help Lexical Resource indirectly, as you absorb natural phrases and collocations from the material you shadow. Learn more about the scoring in our IELTS band score guide.

What PTE Speaking Assesses

PTE Academic speaking is scored by computer, and oral fluency and pronunciation are scored traits in several tasks. Two tasks map especially closely to shadowing:

  • Repeat Sentence: you hear a sentence and repeat it exactly. This is the listen-and-repeat exercise. Practising it with real speech trains you to hold and reproduce whole chunks.
  • Read Aloud: you read a text out loud. Smooth, naturally phrased reading with appropriate stress and pausing is what you practise when you shadow with the text visible.

Smoother, more natural delivery also helps in longer tasks where you speak in your own words. See PTE Speaking Strategies for task-by-task advice.

Choosing Material for Exam Preparation

  • Talks and lectures on academic topics: useful for PTE and IELTS Academic vocabulary and formal delivery.
  • Interviews and conversations on everyday topics like work, study, hometowns and hobbies: close to the topics in IELTS Speaking Part 1.
  • Opinion videos where one speaker explains and justifies a view: useful models for IELTS Part 3 and longer PTE responses.
  • A clear accent you want to sound like: any standard accent is fine for both exams. What matters is clarity.

A Four-Week Exam Plan

  • Week 1: daily shadowing of one short interview. Focus on rhythm and weak forms.
  • Week 2: a short academic talk. Practise repeating full sentences after one listen, like Repeat Sentence.
  • Week 3: shadow with the text, then read the transcript aloud without the audio, matching the speaker's phrasing, like Read Aloud.
  • Week 4: keep shadowing, and add timed speaking practice using the phrases you have learned. Record yourself and compare.

Shadowing Is Not Enough on Its Own

Shadowing improves how you speak, not what you say. For the exams, you also need to practise answering questions under time pressure, organising ideas, and using a range of vocabulary and grammar. Use shadowing as your daily pronunciation and fluency workout alongside task practice.
