Two exercises are often confused: listen-and-repeat (hear a sentence, then say it) and shadowing (say it while you hear it). They look similar, but they train different things. Knowing the difference helps you use each at the right moment.
Listen-and-Repeat
You play a sentence, the audio stops, and you repeat it. This is the classic language-lab exercise. Because there is a pause, you rely on short-term memory: you have to hold the sentence in your head and then reproduce it. The pause also gives you time to think about how to pronounce difficult words.
Strengths: accuracy, time to notice details, low stress, good for beginners and for difficult sentences.
Weaknesses: slower than real communication, and you may "fix" the sentence in your memory, repeating what you think you heard rather than what was said.
Shadowing
You speak at the same time as the audio, staying just behind the speaker. There is no pause and no time to think. You must recognise and reproduce speech in real time, the way you need to when someone is speaking to you.
Strengths: real-time listening, rhythm and intonation, fluency at natural speed.
Weaknesses: demanding, frustrating on material that is too hard, and easy to slur over sounds you are not sure of.
Side by Side
| Listen-and-repeat | Shadowing | |
|---|---|---|
| Timing | After the sentence | During the sentence |
| Main skill | Accuracy, short-term memory | Real-time processing, prosody |
| Difficulty | Lower | Higher |
| Best level | Beginner upward | Intermediate upward |
| Best moment | Learning a new passage | After you know the passage |
Use Both, in Order
The two exercises fit naturally into one sequence. When a recording is new, repeat each sentence after it plays, slowing it down if needed, until you can say it correctly. Then switch to shadowing: speak along with it at normal speed, first with the text and then without.
LingoLevel's Shadowing Practice is built around this. The player plays one sentence at a time and stops, so you can repeat it in the pause, or speak along while it plays. Press Space to replay the current sentence, and the arrow keys to move between sentences.
A Note on Exam Tasks
Listen-and-repeat is not just a learning exercise: the PTE Academic exam includes a Repeat Sentence task that is exactly this. If you are preparing for it, see Shadowing for IELTS and PTE Speaking.
